Art Therapies and Child Psychotherapy

Our team of Art Therapists, Dramatherapists, Music Therapists and Integrative Child Psychotherapists work with pupils for whom this is thought likely to be beneficial, helping them to develop a sense of identity, self-esteem and creativity.  Our team’s focus is on the emotional well-being of the pupil.

Arts therapies are offered to children and young people across the school – from Foundation Stage to Post 16 – and are adjusted to their developmental needs. Most children who attend Blossom House School access some form of arts therapy for a period of time.

Children can be offered individual sessions or small group settings and the work can be short or long term, ranging from a term to a number of years, depending on the child’s needs.

Sessions are confidential, but we do keep parents informed verbally and in writing. If you have questions please do contact the therapist working with your child.

Referrals to therapy are usually made via a staff member and the Head of House and parent’s permission will be sought before therapy is offered.

How can it help?

Therapeutic provision can offer the children and young people a different way of relating beyond the confines and pressures of the class group and the learning situation, by using the creative arts, play and talking. The primary aim is to help the pupil to work through and process emotional issues that can be inhibiting them in their wider experiences at home and school.

It is hoped through therapy that the child/young person may achieve increased emotional self-expression, self-awareness and awareness of others, self-confidence and self-esteem.  The development of an interactive relationship with the therapist can support pupils’ creativity, imagination and play skills and their attention and focus.

All of the approaches focus on the relationship between the child and therapist and are primarily child led. In therapy the children are encouraged to interact and communicate with other people, and it helps them to focus on the emotional aspect of their difficulties using a psycho-therapeutic approach.

All of the therapists in our team are qualified from recognised training courses and are all members of professional bodies including:  UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC).
